In this second episode of ‘Therapy Tea’, we delve into the complex and multilayered world of body image and ideas around eating among teenagers. As we grow up, we are exposed to societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards through different means – sometimes through observations, sometimes through our own experiences and sometimes through various sources and media and social media platforms.
This is a conversation between Samaya Kumar, a Grade 12 graduate and MsPriya Ahluwalia, a Psychologist and Narrative Practitioner at Children First, who explores the role of social media and social norms in creating an unsustainable relationship with food and eating. Through personal anecdotes and clinical perspectives, we shed light on what internalization of societal expectations can look like, how an individual’s brain responds to external validation, and the extent to which an individual and different areas of their life can be influenced by their environment. Navigating this struggle can feel like a difficult and isolating process, and this episode touches upon how to strengthen your voice so that you can slowly rediscover a home in your body.
