Episode 1: Stress and Anxiety through the journey of High School
After almost three years in therapy, and seeing how much I’ve changed and grown as a person, I wanted to start something that reflects all the things I’ve learned that I hope to carry with me and all the things I’ve left behind. From the perspective of a client (also an extremely confused 16-year-old!) and therapist, therapy tea talks about the messy, chaotic, painful but also beautiful aspects of growing up, learning and trying to navigate the world as a young adult.
The first episode of ‘Therapy Tea’ was hosted by Samaya Kumar, a high school student currently studying in Grade 12 along with Thwisha Bajpai, Psychologist and Narrative Practitioner at Children First, New Delhi. The focus of this episode was talking about stress and anxiety in adolescents, specifically, high school students. Stress often becomes rooted into the lives of many high school students, so much so that the threshold for a manageable amount of stress keeps increasing among young adults. There are many factors which contribute to perpetuating this cycle.
This episode discussed the affective aspects of stress as well as the body’s physiological responses like fight, flight and freeze mode. Stress can look different for different people in the way it presents itself, and there are various ways of coping, challenging and combating it. A few touched upon were visualization, mindfulness, and understanding more about our relationship with our bodies amongst others. This could range from pausing and watching our breath, calling a trusted person for support, spending time in nature or engaging in activities of comfort.
What can anxiety look like? Where and how can one experience it in their body or mind? How much space is it occupying in my day-to-day life? What helps in alleviating or supporting anxiety? This candid conversation sheds light on lived experiences with anxiety, its impact on mental health and insights gained along the journey of adolescence!
